The Cereal Box Became a Hat!

Hello everyone,

I hope that when you read this post, you are keeping safe and healthy. Remember to follow your local government's orders when it comes to wearing face masks. Don't be annoyed with it - it is there to protect you from others and others from you.

The other day, I realized that we, parents, do a lot of weird things when we become parents. You tend to talk baby language when they are newborn and make all these funny smiles and faces. You are right there with them in the sand box or water table - sometimes, even the pool. You play silly games and have pretend meals... and then, you start to incorporate props to help you in dire circumstances.

I was waiting for my husband to get ready before taking the kids outside. I had to entertain and quick because they were beginning to get restless. I needed something that would surprise them and that could be used in a variety of ways. I searched around for anything that I could find. And then, I found it: the empty cereal box!

I immediately placed it on my head - they both looked at me with confused looks. Then, it started - a little corner smile. At that moment, I knew that I had their attention. I rolled with it. I started to be a train operator - we walked around the kitchen and were doing all sorts of sounds. When that got boring for them - like a minute later - I was a drill sergeant and we were marching all around the kitchen. We switched from train to marching until my husband arrived. It was a success and I felt like a hero - until I saw the last crumbs in the box tangled in my hair...

I must have looked like a crazy person but I must admit that it was fun to just give into your inner child - because if you think it's gone, trust me, it can come pretty quickly. And it kept my kids entertained. I mean, they still think I am hilarious and I will milk it as long as I am able. In a few years, they will think I am not cool, not funny and just a mom. And so, I am enjoying this time because it will end sooner than I want.

In times like those, it dawns on me how kids are so much living in the moment. I, unlike them, just want to plan everything out, make lists, get things done and check things off my list. I want to be efficient and I dislike wasting time. Kids?? They care nothing about those things and that is okay. For one, we need to let kids be kids. For two, they will have plenty of time to "adult" when they are "adults". Until then, I am letting be kids.

Now the cereal box on my head is not my craziest moment - but it was the most recent one. I just want to make it clear that when it comes to our children, we need to become more like them to have those memories. If we stick to wanting the house to look spotless, having them all dressed up and neat, having no loudness in the house - it won't be a house, it will be an ice box. Let your house be filled with joy, laughter and fun!

What is the most outrageous you have had to do to keep your kids entertained? Let's all have a laugh and build our community!

Until my next post, enjoy the weekend, keep safe and healthy!
