Poop Explosions and Mom Life

Hello everyone,

I hope this post finds you safe and healthy. Remember to wash your hands, not touch your face and wear your face masks. Let's stop the spread of Covid but let's never stop the spread of kindness.

Poop explosions...you hear about them and you think: well, that could never happen to me? Who let's their children have one? Right? And then...it happens! Little disclaimer - the word "poop" will be mentioned several times - so beware!"

The first time was with our daughter. It was Easter Sunday, she had on a beautiful outfit and we had just gotten back from Mass. We are about to give her a bottle and then, we saw it - it went all the way up to her neck. I thought: How in the world did I let this happen?? I did not even smell her poop... We changed her, bathed her and she fell asleep.

The second time happened with our daughter again - it was during a road trip. She was doing quite well on the ride and was cheerful all the way. Before we arrived at our destination, we stopped at the local Walmart to get some groceries for our stay. As we got to the counter to pay, I thought to get her out so she can be in my arms and move a little. I did not have to pick her up all the way as I noticed right away what had taken place. It was all over her back, clothes and had seeped into the car seat.

The third time was with our oldest son. We had packed up the car to drive to a park so we could take a nice stroll with the kids. As we were driving, I started to get a wave, here and there, of poop... I thought nothing of it because babies do poop. I thought that once we got out of the car, we would change them and go on our walk. Well, then, he started to cry and that was unusual because we are blessed with kids who do not cry in their car seats. So, the fact that he started to cry was an indication that something was not right.

We park and start getting ready when we see it - it was everywhere! It seeped into his pants, his socks, all up his back and in the car seat. It was not a poop explosion it was a poop volcano! I usually pack for any occasion, but I was not prepared for this one. We assessed the situation, changed him and had to wrap him up in a blanket because we did not have a change of clothes - why? don't ask, but know that wherever we go, I always bring one now.

With our newborn, we have not had that pleasure, but we know it will happen... and we are ready for whatever he will bring on.

Needless to say, it is nobody's fault when it comes to this type of situation. Sometimes, for whatever reason, some bowel movements are stronger than others. They may have eaten something that loosened up things more and there you have it.

What is more important is how you react to it. First of, getting angry at them is not how to approach it because it is not their fault. Second, always be calm, assess the situation and damage and just start cleaning. Third, be prepared ANYTIME YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH YOUR KIDS!!! This last one, I had to learn the hard way - so know that you have been warned!

Mom life is a fun life. It is not always the fun you intended to have, but I have learned that it is always better to laugh at the situation than yell or cry - you can do those later when you are not in front of the kids. Mom life is unpredictable, adventurous and messy. Mom life is my life - and I try to embrace it as much as I can.

When I am unable to embrace it, I pray and journal and talk to my sister, who has been a Mom far longer than I have. It helps to have a sounding board and to know that you are not crazy.

Do you have any "poop explosions or volcano explosions" stories? If so, please share. Let's all laugh about it because crying - it just causes more wrinkles (not sure about this, but that is what I tell myself to stop the crying...).

Until my next post, keep safe and healthy. Remember to wash your hands, not touch your face and wear you face mask in public. Let's stop the spread of Covid-19 but let's never stop the spread of kindness.
