When it's quiet in the house and the kids are not sleeping...

Hello everyone,

I hope that when you read this post, you are keeping safe and healthy!

Here is a scenario: the kids are awake and you know there are in the house...you could hear move and play around and then, it got quiet - very quiet! You think: 1) maybe they just fell asleep on the floor - totally unlikely 2) they found a treasure and are mesmerized - totally unlikely and 3) they are up to no good - MOST LIKELY SCENARIO!!! Then, you begin to panic a bit and start looking around for them. Your hope is that your house is not starting to burn or that your walls are still intact or that one of your kids is not stuffing the other one through the banister...

Yes, quiet is nice when you have small children...because they are all sleeping. But when you know they are not sleeping --- when you know they are in the house...but you don't know where and it suddenly got very quiet...yeah, you panic! You panic because you are know they are up to no good. I used to hear stories from my sister about this type of situation... when it started to happen to me, I knew what I had to do - brace for the worse.

Most often, they are in a closet, our home office, the ottoman (where all the shoes are) or licking or scratching something... not too bad, since they are two and one. But what will I find when they are older? What will they be doing?

My sister-in-law has, so far, wins for the worst thing her children did when it got quiet... When she found them, they had Desitin (super thick butt cream) all over them and their hair... I can only imagine how long it took to clean them up! If it had been our daughter, who has very curly and textured hair, I may have considered shaving her hair...

Desitin is not the only thing to fear...there is Sharpie or any other permanent marker, yogurt, lipstick, face cream, sunscreen, vaseline...basically anything that can take FOREVER to come off or wash off. And just when you think they have gone through everything, they will find something else...

The good thing is that Google is your best friend in those types of situation. The other great thing is that when you Google it and you find the answer - you feel better that it has happened to other parents out there. Yes, it always makes me feel better when I see or hear that my kids are not the only ones that behave in such a way.

Can you keep a close eye on them at all times? No. And even when you do, they still find a way to sneak something on you when they see you are distracted. Kids are just fun that way - yes, they are! They keep you on your toes and they show you a great lesson - LIVE IN THE MOMENT!! Carpe Diem was invented by children - not really, but it feels like they could have invented it. And my kids teach me this every single day - especially on those days when I have everything planned out - yeah, those plans go OUT the window...

What did you discover when it got quiet and the kids were not sleeping? Please share and let's build our community.

Until my next post, please keep safe and healthy. Wear your masks and help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
