Our Adoption Story - Adoption #1 (continued)
Hello everyone,
I hope this post finds you healthy and blessed.
Last post ended with our daughter being born... Now, let's go back to that day, how we managed to get through it and wait two full days before the birthmom consented to the adoption.
The day our daughter was born was exciting and scary at the same time. My husband and I decided to fill our day with errands. Anything to just keep us busy. Yet, no matter how hard we kept busy, it was hard not to think about it. We both kept checking our phones constantly.
Later in the day, we visited friends who graciously gave us some baby items. As I was catching up with our friend, my husband received a call and left the room. He came back quickly and said:"We have to go." ... and so, we left.
In the car, he let me know that our daughter was born, that she was okay and healthy and now, we had to wait... We had to wait two full days to know if she would be ours. We had already waited so long to be parents, another two days would not be the end of the world, right?
That evening, we were privileged to be able to speak with the birthmom and even hear our daughter a little. It was hard not to go to the hospital. But, we wanted the birthmom to enjoy that time with her daughter until it was time for her to consent to the adoption. If the adoption went through, we knew we had the rest of our lives with her. It was important for us to give the birthmom that time.
I am not sure how we managed to get through those two days, but before we knew it, the big day arrived. I knew what time the lawyers would be meeting with the birthmom. I just kept praying and called my mom to pass the time. It felt like it was taking a long time and that is when my mind started to go in sorts of directions... But, I trusted that God had a plan for us and that no matter the outcome, I had to trust Him.
Our lawyers usually post when an adoption consent has been made - and so, I kept checking their page to see if I could get an update. And then, I saw it - a video with our lawyer confirming a birthmom had consented to the adoption!!! I knew it was ours and I just started to get so excited!! I was on cloud nine and the phone rang immediately and it was confirmed! She was our daughter and I became a mom at that moment!!
I hung up with our lawyers and immediately called my husband who was, I suspect, glued to his phone. I then called my mom and shouted: "SHE IS OURS! SHE IS OURS!!" I then sent a message to all our family and then, I started unboxing our first baby item: the bassinet!
The rest of the day was filled with unboxing baby items and getting the baby bag ready. I set up her bassinet with diapers, formula and her clothes. Once my husband got home, he installed the car seat and put the stroller together. We also confirmed our huge Amazon cart which contained all that we needed for our daughter. We exchanged a few phone calls with the lawyers and the social worker at the hospital and off we were to meet our daughter and see the birthmom.
A few hours later, we were driving back home with this tiny, beautiful girl. It was surreal! I just kept looking at her and thinking: "WOW! This is my daughter, our daughter!" She looked so small in her car seat. I spent most of the car ride just staring at her making sure she was warm and cozy.
Once we got home, I took her and gave her a little house tour. My husband thought it was weird, but had read that it was a good idea to do so. I know, I know - she was but three days old, but I just wanted to do it. We got her ready for bed and we took turns feeding her.
The next day, our life changed forever. We went from a two person family to a family of three. We were finally parents!
Until my next post, be still in waiting.
